Hello dear current and prospective mothers and fathers,
Our children are our most treasured possessions. This program has been prepared for you to make your newborn baby’s life easier. In today’s program, we will be discussing the sleep patterns of our babies. Although you might dream of your baby sleeping like an angel, in reality, the situation is completely different. Let’s get into it!
A newborn sleeping pattern refers to the unique way a baby sleeps during their first few months. Unlike adults, newborns sleep in shorter cycles and may wake frequently throughout the day and night. Adults wake up from a deep sleep every 90 minutes but nevertheless manage to fall asleep again by turning and shuffling around in bed. The deep sleep cycle of babies on the other hand lasts 45 minutes. This is because their internal body clock, or circadian rhythm, is still developing. Unfortunately, babies cannot go back to sleep after waking up from their deep sleep in 45 minutes. They start crying and moving around which is the reason for long sleepless nights.
To better understand your baby’s sleep needs, it's helpful to break down the stages of a newborn sleeping pattern:
Introduce calming activities such as a warm bath, gentle rocking, or soft lullabies to signal bedtime.
Ensure the nursery is quiet, dimly lit, and at a comfortable temperature. A soothing environment promotes better sleep.
Look for signs of sleepiness, such as yawning, rubbing eyes, or fussiness. Responding to these cues promptly helps prevent overtiredness.
Keep the lights bright and engage in stimulating activities during the day. At night, dim the lights and keep interactions quiet and soothing.
If your baby has trouble sleeping or exhibits unusual sleep behaviors, consult your pediatrician. Addressing concerns early ensures your baby’s well-being.
See you in the next program, goodbye for now.
